Gangtok, Measured in Metres of Climb

Gangtok grew around India’s first legal casino — plan a day here the way the altitude actually works.

Historical content for travellers. Age-restricted subject matter: 18/21+, verify before publishing.

Gangtok does not read like most Indian hill towns on a map. Streets stack on top of each other rather than sitting side by side, and a walk that looks short on paper can mean forty minutes of steady climbing. Locals plan their day around metres of elevation gain as much as kilometres of distance, and any visitor who ignores that fact ends up either exhausted by lunchtime or stuck asking for a taxi they didn’t budget for.

This guide exists because Gangtok’s modern hotel district has a specific origin story worth understanding before you explore it on foot. In the mid-to-late 1990s, Sikkim became the first Indian state to license a legal, land-based casino inside a hotel in Gangtok — commonly described as the first legal land-based casino in independent India (dates and the exact property should be verified before you rely on them). What followed was a wave of hotel construction and renovation along a handful of central streets, much of which still defines the town’s hospitality core today, decades after the original gaming license.

We are not a casino, a hotel booking service or a tour operator. We are an independent travel and history guide built around one practical problem: helping you plan a walkable day in a town where every route has a vertical component. The centrepiece of the site is The Altitude & Distance Planner, a small tool that lists nearby landmarks sorted by walking time and tells you, in plain numbers, how much climbing or descending each one involves from your starting point.

A note on scope. This site does not offer, promote or link to any gambling activity. It is a travel and local-history resource. If gaming history isn’t of interest to you, the planner and district pages still work as a general walking guide to central Gangtok.
