The area described below sits close to and just off MG Marg, in the flatter band of town that made hotel-building practical in the first place (see How the Casino District Began for the background). Names, exact addresses and current operating status are not listed here as fixed facts — hotels change hands, are renamed and sometimes close, so treat every entry as a general orientation rather than a directory. MG Marg and its immediate side streets
This pedestrian-only promenade is the flattest stretch in Gangtok and the natural starting point for any walk through the district. Several mid-size hotels built or substantially renovated from the 1990s onward sit within a few minutes’ walk of the promenade, mixed in with cafes, a couple of civic buildings and a small cluster of general shops. The street-level experience here is pedestrian and low-key rather than dense; there is no visible signage promoting gaming, and most buildings read simply as hotels.
Tibet Road and the older hotel row
A short climb or descent from MG Marg (depending on your exact route) sits an older row of hotel buildings, several with visibly older facades than the newer construction near the promenade. This is generally considered the closest thing Gangtok has to an original hotel row from the early gaming-era boom, though which specific buildings date from that period is a detail worth checking locally rather than assuming from architecture alone.
The Development Area, upper ridge
Further up the slope, the Development Area holds a mix of civic offices, newer guesthouses and a few larger hotels that chose the quieter, higher ground over the busier promenade. The climb from MG Marg is noticeable — see The Altitude & Distance Planner for an estimate of exactly how much — and the payoff is generally a quieter street and, in clear weather, wider views back down over the town.
What you will not find described here
This page deliberately does not describe interiors, gaming floors, entry requirements or operating hours of any gaming facility, current or historic. It is a street-level, exterior-only orientation aimed at understanding how the town is laid out and why certain blocks look the way they do. If you are looking for current details about any specific hotel’s facilities, contact that hotel directly.
Walking tip. Because the district spans a real elevation range, decide your loop direction based on fitness rather than distance alone. Starting at the highest point and walking down toward MG Marg is generally the more comfortable option for a first visit.
