The Altitude & Distance Planner

Pick where you’re standing and how much climbing you want to do — the list below reorders itself around that.

Gangtok’s hotel district sits on a slope, not a grid, so “nearby” is a poor guide to how tiring a walk will be. This tool takes a starting point and a comfort level for climbing, then lists a handful of nearby landmarks — some historic, some scenic, some purely civic — sorted by walking time from where you are. Every figure is approximate and should be treated as a planning estimate, not a survey measurement.

Starting point
Fitness level

Elevation change and walking time are approximate — verify before your visit. “Flat routes only” shows points within about 15 metres of elevation change from your start; “Moderate climbs OK” shows all points.

Suggested walking order

Choose a starting point and a fitness level to see a suggested walking order.

How to read the numbers. A plus sign means you climb to reach that point from your chosen start; a minus sign means you descend. Walking time assumes an unhurried, acclimatising pace and does not account for altitude sickness, weather or road closures — always allow extra time and verify current conditions locally.

Why we built it this way

Most travel sites list attractions by straight-line distance or by neighbourhood name, which works fine on flat ground and badly in Gangtok. A neighbourhood label doesn’t tell you whether the walk there is a gentle stroll or a knee-testing climb, and straight-line distance ignores the switchbacks that Gangtok’s roads are built around. Sorting by walking time from your actual starting point, and showing the elevation change in plain metres rather than a vague difficulty label, gives you something you can actually plan a morning around.

The six points in this tool mix historic markers, viewpoints and ordinary civic landmarks on purpose. Not every stop needs to be dramatic; some are simply useful waypoints for orienting yourself while you get a feel for how the town’s slopes connect to each other. Treat the list as a starting shortlist, not an exhaustive map — combine it with a paper or offline map of central Gangtok for anything beyond a short walk.
